doctor, doctor
Kids are great until they rip your fingernail off.
If you remember when I posted about the rock mentoring program I'm involved in, you will recall that the kids I work with are severely mistreated and are not loved in appropriate ways. I have come to consider them my own and I look forward to hearing about their days at school and seeing their smiles when I come in the room with cookies.
Playing basketball can get really intense when you have a lot of violent, competitive boys playing. Mister batman, as I call him, decided to tackle another boy and throw as many cuss words as he could think of out in the air. It's a big deal when someone doesn't understand how to play the game of basketball which upset mister batman a little too much. I told him I was taking away the basketball until he could prove to me he was a better superhero, because superheroes love people instead of hurt people. Well he decided to kick the basketball but instead he kicked off half of my nail. It was lovely.
I didn't notice until mister spiderman pointed out the obvious loss of my blood all over the floor. This little boy turned from spiderman to doctor in a matter of seconds, it was pretty incredible. He took me to his doctor station and decided to rip off the rest of my nail that was attached to my very exposed skin. It hurt and I might have teared up a little.
He accidentally stabbed my finger over and over until he wrapped it in different colored bandaids and white mesh. By the time he finished I had a suffocating finger throbbing underneath one hundred pounds of white net. It was so wonderful to watch him genuinely care about someone other than himself, because at that age it is hard to acknowledge someone else is in pain. He's going to grow up and be so amazing.
The picture was taken after a few days so it had healed a lot, I didn't want to gross you out with the one taken right after it happened. So spiderman and batman are some pretty cool kids and that's my story.
