If there is one thing I've learned while being around these girls it is the problem of self esteem. All week I had girls sit by me and hug me, telling me how they are so upset because they aren't as pretty as the "other girls" and they don't get all the guys like the "other girls." When everyone would get ready for dinner and all the "other girls" dressed up and hit on boys all night, my girls stayed in basketball shorts with their hair in ponytails without thinking twice about boys. It breaks my heart because I know how they feel. I understand not feeling good enough, and I understand how destructive comparing yourself to others can be.
So as these girls new big sister, I decided that for SYS (a big night at Barton Bible Camp, where we have a lot of visitors) I would do all of their hair and makeup. They talked about it for days and kept reminding me every hour about how amazing and fun it would be. I'm so glad they had a good time.
I'm no pro at any of this and really I have no idea where this idea came from. But now that I know how much impact I can have on one person, it makes me want to do stuff like this more often. I love knowing that I'm an example to these girls, I love making a difference in all of their sweet lives. It's nice to be looked up to.
Dear journal, I'm a big sister to three little girls now. I wish I could be a counselor forever and ever.
Such a generous thing to do! Looks like you had a great experience with it. Such a touching post! xo
